Why we stock Anua

A brand built on one ingredient, one product we recommend constantly, and one we would talk most beginners out of.

Routinae sells some of the products written about here, so read this the way you would read any shop’s opinion of its own shelves. Where we think a cheaper product does the same job we say so, and where the evidence is thin we say that too. Our buying standard is published so you can check the argument against it.

Anua arrived in Europe fast and loudly, on the back of a toner with a number in the name. The number is real - 77% heartleaf extract - and it is a rare case of the marketing hook and the formulation being the same thing.

What we kept

Heartleaf 77% Soothing Toner, 250 ml. The single most useful bottle in the shop for skin that is reacting. The size matters more than people realise: 250 ml means you will actually use enough of it, and under-using a calming product is the most common reason it appears not to work.

Heartleaf Pore Control Cleansing Oil. The only cleansing oil we have seen make a visible difference to blackheads with consistent use. It is aimed at congestion rather than makeup removal, though it does both.

Heartleaf Quercetinol Cleansing Foam. A rare foaming cleanser that does not leave sensitive skin feeling stripped.

The one we would talk you out of

The Niacinamide 10% + TXA 4% Serum is in the catalogue, and we recommend it to almost nobody who is new to actives. Ten percent niacinamide is enough to irritate a meaningful number of people. It works - it is simply stronger than most people need as a first step, and starting there is how a good ingredient gets an undeserved reputation.

If uneven tone is your concern and you have not used actives before, start with a 2% product, twice a week, and give it two months.

What the evidence actually supports

Niacinamide has genuinely reasonable published support for the appearance of uneven tone and for barrier function. Tranexamic acid has emerging support. Heartleaf - Houttuynia cordata - has much thinner evidence, mostly on soothing and antioxidant activity in laboratory conditions rather than on human skin over time.

So we describe the toner as helping skin feel calmer, not as treating redness. The difference matters legally and it also happens to be honest.

A note on price

Anua is one of the most heavily discounted brands in this category - we found an average discount of 22% across Dutch retailers, and on some products more than 30%. We are not going to match that. If you find the toner cheaper elsewhere from a seller you trust, buy it there. We would rather you thought of us as honest than as cheapest, because we cannot be both.

Who should skip this brand

If your skin is calm and you simply want hydration, the heartleaf products are not the best use of your money - a plain hyaluronic toner costs less and does more for that. And if you are already using a leave-on acid, adding the niacinamide serum on top is asking for trouble.

Think we have got this wrong? Tell us — being corrected in public is the price of publishing your own rules, and it is a fair one.
