Why Korean skincare didn't work for you — four honest reasons
We sell some of what is named here
Routinae sells some of the products written about here, so read this the way you would read any shop’s opinion of its own shelves. Where we think a cheaper product does the same job we say so, and where the evidence is thin we say that too. Our buying standard is published so you can check the argument against it.
We sell Korean skincare, so this is an odd article for us to write. But "I tried K-beauty and it broke me out / did nothing / made things worse" is one of the most common things people arrive here believing — and it deserves a straight answer instead of a shrug or a sales pitch. In our experience it is almost always one of four reasons, and the order matters: the first two cost nothing.
1. Too much, too fast
This is most of the cases. Korean skincare arrives on your feed as a ten-step ritual: an acid, a retinal, a vitamin C, all in the same enthusiastic week. Each product may be excellent; the pile is not. Skin that was fine starts stinging, flaking or breaking out, and the products get the blame the schedule earned. The fix is subtraction. Cleanse, moisturise, sunscreen — nothing else for four weeks. It is free, and it works more often than anything we sell.
2. Not long enough
Skin renews itself in weeks. A cleanser can prove itself in days, but a serum for tone or texture cannot show anything real in a fortnight. If a routine got two weeks and a verdict, it was not tested — it was sampled. Eight weeks is the honest trial, and it is why nothing enters our own catalogue without one.
3. Your skin argues with the usual ingredients
Here is the part most K-beauty shops will not say: some skin is simply unhappy with the ingredients most Korean formulas — ours included — lean on. Chemical UV filters are the common one; added fragrance is another. If sunscreen itself seems to be the problem, or the lighter and more elegant a formula, the worse your skin likes it, that is not failure. It is a different requirement. Mineral-only sunscreens and unfragranced clinic lines answer it — and Korea, whose whole genius is elegant chemical filters, barely makes them.
4. You need a format Korea doesn't make
Sunscreen you can brush over makeup at two in the afternoon. A tinted mineral shield you will actually wear every day because it replaces something else. Barrier care built for skin around clinic treatments. These are real needs, no Korean brand serves them well, and pretending otherwise would be the kind of dishonesty we started this shop to avoid.
Where that leaves you
If your reason is 1 or 2, you need less, and time — not a new shelf. Our routine tool will tell you exactly that, for free, and it has no idea this article exists. If your reason is 3 or 4, we keep a small shelf called Beyond Korea: clinic-line brands, priced exactly as their makers price them, that exist only because they do jobs no Korean product does. The quiz will never send you there. That is not a bug.
