Why we stock COSRX
Three products from the brand everyone starts with, one of which we sell knowing we make almost nothing on it.
Routinae sells some of the products written about here, so read this the way you would read any shop’s opinion of its own shelves. Where we think a cheaper product does the same job we say so, and where the evidence is thin we say that too. Our buying standard is published so you can check the argument against it.
COSRX is where most people meet Korean skincare, usually through snail mucin, usually because of a video. That makes it easy to be snobbish about. We are not - the products are good, and the brand has largely resisted reformulating its hits into something worse.
What we kept
Advanced Snail 96 Mucin Power Essence. One of very few K-beauty products that has stayed a bestseller for a decade. It is unusually good at making skin feel repaired rather than merely hydrated, and it layers under anything. It is also noticeably slippy, and some people hate that. We say so on the page.
Low pH Good Morning Gel Cleanser. The pH is the entire point. Most foaming cleansers sit too alkaline and take the barrier with them, which is why skin feels tight afterwards. This one does not.
The product we sell at almost no margin
The Acne Pimple Master Patch costs us more to post than we make on it. Sold on its own it is a loss. We stock it anyway, because it is the only thing in this shop that visibly works in a single night, and because telling someone to buy a ?22 serum when a ?5 patch would do is exactly the behaviour we set out to avoid.
Add it to a routine and it pays for itself. Buy it alone and we would honestly rather you got it wherever is cheapest.
What the evidence actually supports
Snail secretion filtrate has less published research behind it than the enthusiasm suggests. What exists points to hydration and skin-conditioning effects. If you want a well-evidenced humectant, hyaluronic acid has more behind it and costs less. People keep buying the snail essence because of how it feels, which is a legitimate reason to buy something as long as nobody pretends otherwise.
Hydrocolloid patches are different - they have a genuine mechanism. They keep a wound moist and stop you touching it. Most of the benefit is the second part.
What we cannot verify yet
No CPNP reference or named EU Responsible Person from a supplier yet, for any of these. Snail secretion filtrate is also an animal-derived ingredient, which brings its own registration requirements in the Netherlands. Both are in progress and neither is finished.
Who should skip this brand
If you dislike tacky textures, the snail essence will annoy you every single morning. If your blemishes sit under the skin rather than coming to a head, patches do nothing at all for those. And if you are vegan, snail secretion filtrate is not for you - it is collected without harming the animals, but it is still an animal product.
